At the very beginning of my career, I had the good fortune to study under the guidance of some
of the most renown vocal coaches in the world. Not only have they each come from very different cultural and geographical areas of the world, but they also each possess diverse and brilliant musical styles, traditions and artistic backgrounds which remain the primary source from where
I have absorbed within me the technique, the musicality, the rhythms and the history and styles
of Jazz and Gospel, as well as Opera.
Over the years I have learned to combine and integrate this acquired priceless knowledge,
and have added these rich ingredients to my nature… my Southern Italian “Mediterranean roots
and traditions”, developing and creating my own special style and technique of vocal coaching that will apply to any style of singing. The legendary Louis Armstrong was quoted as saying that “there are only 2 kinds of music, the good and the bad.” This has always met with my desire to be able to sing everything that sounded beautiful to my ears, whether it be a jazz standard, or an aria.
During my career I have collaborated with exceptional musicians from both worlds of “Jazz & Classical”, and I can personally testify that a “good and healthy” vocal technique allows one to sing anything. There is no difference between a “classical” or a “modern” technique of this style or that one. To utilize the voice correctly THERE IS ONLY ONE TECHNIQUE. The limitations are not in the voice itself, but in the limitations that we as human beings place in front of ourselves. Unfortunately, quite often it is the “academic” aspect or the lack of knowledge of all the various music genres, that can limit a pupils capabilities and convictions. I suggest to all the singers to listen all of the beautiful styles of music that the world has given to us and keeps on giving to us, and I urge everyone to look for an “academic” teaching with the most “well rounded” and “broad” manner as possible so as not to limit oneself only to the principles of the pure voice technique.
My goal in sharing with you my CROSSOVER SINGING METHOD is to encourage this strong academic back round so, as a performer one can integrate this technique into the “performance” aspect, which is equally if not more important than the “academic” aspect. The ability to share your gift with an audience and to do it with confidence and ease knowing that you are doing so without causing harm to your precious instrument, your vocal cords, is my goal in sharing this book with you.
